Yeah I remember having this sort of conversation with several people over a few nights – each set of newbies who’d work with me each year could not believe who were bargain hunting every night.

TV and media wants us it was those on the poverty line who hunt for cheaper goods in order to survive, but in our area the reality it was everyone. It really brought out the discussions among us – is it greedy? is it survival? Is it common sense? Is it helping with waste? Or all of the above?

CJ however is one of the more vocal opinions I’d hear a lot though.

(note: These are character opinions)

[Some of the vultures are rummaging around intently in the basket of reduced items, checking condition, what they are and the price stickers. Ash and CJ chat over them]

Ash: Er... you can't blame people for wanting reductions though, can you? Not every one can afford to eat, y'know.
CJ: Well yeah - but them? You've got everyone from those on benefits to bargain hunters to the rich grandmas ferreting around in their for fuck's sake, It's just because it's cheap.

[CJ points to a spot on the counter of something that needs to be reduced]

CJ: Reduce something by ten pence.
Ash: I dunno. I usually go to fifty pence less than regular-
CJ: Don't bother. They'll buy it anyway. Do it.
