At least he didn’t try and “take a seat”!

——

NEW 2022 version! I know I know the golden rule of webcomics is “don’t redraw your first chapters over and and over” and yes I am guilty as charged but please trust me; this is more than cosmetic and something I wanted to do to make my later chapters feel more satisfying to me, you know?

Back in the first draft in 2018 I didn’t mention Ash’s name until far too late into the chapter – so if you wanna start a comic, make sure your have a name in there somewhere. Also saying that cause when I did this on my first shift I forgot to mention my name to the receptionist too so it’s a double whammy of awkward!

Everything but the first panel is new on this page compared to the originals – feel free to look at the 2020 version of chapter 1 here

The young lad walks up to a counter inside the store entrance that has the words WELCOME DESK written onto the front and a giant sign behind them reading WELCOME TO DAMNSONS. Two women are busy behind computer screens as they approach.

Young lad: Er... hi?
One of the ladies looks up from their screen to meet his gaze.
"How can I help?"
"I'm a new starter here and I - ummm.... I'm here to see the Food Service manager?

The woman smiles warmly and grabs her phone. "Sure thing sweetie! What's your name?"
"ASH BROWN!" the soft young man with ginger dyed hair replies, red in the cheek with slight nervousness.

"Alright, I'll go give him a ring now. Sit tight!"
Misreading rhe phrase, Ash looks around frantically for seating nearby.
Ash: "Ah! OK! Where are the chairs?"
"Oh! no no, it's an expression!"

Bursting into a nervous laugh, Ash tenses up and grips his backpack strapes and turns a deeper red.
"O-OH YEAH! OF COURSE! DUH!!"

The young lad is now nervous and fidgeting with his arms, playing a little bit with his backpack straps as the brunette welcome desk lady begins to make a call on her phone.
