Show an inch of weakness and some people will take a mile from you. Sometimes being honest isn’t the best course of action but omitting what you say can be.

The customer clings to his wrapped cookie as he addresses Ash.
Customer: I prefer the fresher ones in the cupboard.
Ash can't meet his eye contact and continues to falter under the pressure.
Ash: But sir- they're all from the same box - most of the time?
The elderly man immediately perks up from his stooped posture, eyes wide as he registers what Ash just said as confirmation.
Customer: Most of the time? Then the ones in there are fresher?
Ash grits his teeth as he realised - oh no! - what he overshared.
Ash: n- not by much? And you can't put your hands in there anyway so-
The customer slowly and meticulously begins to turns away, cookie and walking cane in hands, from the plight of Ash.
Ash: Please.... don't....

The customer exists and Ash is left defeated.
