2023/24 version of chapter 5 – wanted to show more of what verity is really like (since i didn’t spend enough time on her in the previous version which I can talk about that another day)

↓ Transcript
Verity flicks open her box cutter and smiles.
“Been manic for me all day! Myusual childminder does not work over the half term break so I had to go to my parents to drop off Ellie - that’s my daughter - which took forever!”
She begins to cut down the tape of a box.

“She knew she wasn’t going to school today so she chose problems instead!”
Verity lifts a wrapped cheese from the now open box.
“I love her to bits but it is so much easier shipping her off to school with the routine. I suspect she knows it too. But’s that’s what life’s like!”
Ash awkwardly smiles. “Y-yeah? How old is your daughter?”

Verity begins to unwrap the cheese from it’s plastic wrapper, and slice it with the cheese wire. “She’s five! Or as my dad puts it: Old enough now to know she is the boss! Nthing like i was, apparently. But when I see the other parents on the shopfloor struggle, I guess it makes me feel less… chaotic?”

The cheese wries slices the cheese in half with a SHUNK. “Like, from what we saw earlier, everyone else is in the same boat!”
Ash looks down and smiles sweetly. “That’s… weirdly nice?”

Verity takes the half moon of cheese and chuckles. “At least you can say we've given you the
standard day time initiation! Ha ha ha”

Ash chuckles slightly with a subdued “ha ha yeah” however internally he is nervously sweating, thinking: “so that really is the standard way to treat a newbie…?”
