It’s heartbreaking seeing your job/industry fall out of favour due to changing consumer habits. (this comic is around mid 2010’s time FYI though the sentiment applies anytime)

I’m so grateful that (as of writing this 2022) I have a local butcher shop I can support as the supermarkets have perminently closed food service counters once the pandemic closed. Not every town has that luxery. Sorry to end on a downer; I really did like the counters. (I’m writing about them aren’t I?)

The elderly customers turns to leave as Tina and Alexis say their goodbyes back to them. Damian has back to them all, though turning slightly to silently acknowledge them with a smile.
Tina: Thanks hon! we'll see you next week!

Damian scoffs to Tina.
Damian: Another weekly round of routine.
Tina: A week goes by quickly doesn't it?

Damian is washing up, but Tina's expression turns forlorn.
Tina: I can't remember the last time I went to Hadies for the weekly shop...
Alexis pauses coldly.
Alexis: Suppose that makes us the last staffed food counters in the area.

Tina: Well i supposed I hadn't been in there for a while and if no one else has either...
Alexis: oh yeah, no disputin' that. There was hardly any fish on the counter when I did go in!

On the back of the conversation and deep in washing up, Damian muses to himself.
Damian: Counters being closed huh… Shit, I don't know if I could put up with just being on the shop floor.
At least we have displays to work on and … uhh, other stuff...
